The night sky stood over the frozen world. The star were not visible those on the ground. But on the surface of Nyrea, there was nothing that one could see except for the leafless trees and shriveled bushes. There was a silence. A very strange silence. Then, a pitiful howling broke the silence. The world of Nyrea seemed to be howling with this pitiful sound too, but in a way they couldn’t be heard.
The howling was not from far away. Not at all. In fact, it was just in the nearby bush. The howling had come a wolf. Another one of the winged wolves was dead. In a way they will never live again. This had happen because the wingless wolves had to walk along, trying to keep up with the winged wolves. Since flying is faster and takes less energy then walking, it was hard for the wingless wolves to keep up. Saltha, a young, wingless autumn colored wolf, had just died from freezing.
The wolves had been traveling for a long time, since the Time-of-Leaves-Growing. Since then, they have traveled through Time-of-Huge-Strong-Leaves and the Time-When-The-Leaves-Fall. Now, almost half the wolves had died. They would have stayed in there old home, and they had for a long time, but then, disaster struck. The shades, terrible dead wolf spirits, attacked them. The fought, but the shades remained unharmed. At this, the wolves fled. They really had to if they didn’t want to die. Even though they are in the same pack, the winglesses and wingeds never got along that well, but they stayed in the same pack, for they swore an oath to them that they would always stay together.
Zaevix, the alpha of the packs, looked ahead. He realized quickly that this was what they wanted. They left a grove of deciduous trees and entered the area. It was a medium sized ravine, above forty wolf lengths around. The ground was covered with brown dead grass. This place would probably be beautiful in the warmer season, the alpha thought spitefully.
Zaevix stopped, and so did the rest of his pack. He turned to face them. His golden eyes glowed as snow began to fall. He bowed his head slightly, ready to speak. The pack held their breath, ready for the alpha to speak. There was a strange silence. The wolves in the clearing didn’t move. Then, the alpha spoke at last.
“The wingless wolves,” he began. Taking a breath, he continued. “The wingless are nothing but a burden to us.” Many of the wolves in the clearing gasped. What was about to happen?
“The wingless wolves shall for now on go on there one.” The words echoed throughout the frozen clearing. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Nobody did anything but just stare, still as a boulder. Zaevix’s pale, red eyes shined brightly over the crowd of wolves. Then he spoke again.
“All wingless wolves! Go live your own lives!” he yelled out at the wolves. Most of them sat up and began to slowly move out of the clearing. Then, a wingless wolf went up to the alpha. Her brilliant, blue eyes stared warningly at him. “Let them stay,” she said. Zaevix snorted.
“You dare question my authority, Baline?!” Zaevix shouted. He picked up his snowy paw and struck Baline across the face. The impact threw her across the clearing. Then, he spoke again. “All the wingless wolves have ever done to us is slow us down. Plus, you don’t understand that we have more power. Why would our pack’s omega question the alpha?” As he said this, he was glaring at Baline the whole time. She stood up. Her scarred eyes stared into the ones of Zaevix.
“I will kill you before you kill these innocent wolves!” Baline’s voice sounded through out the clearing. After they were said, she lunged at Zaevix with all her strength. Though surprised by the impact, Zaevix reacted quickly. As Baline’s teeth sank into Zaevix’s black shoulder. He swung her off. Then, several winged wolves lunged at Zaevix. Then the wingless wolves joined the battle.
So began a battle that would change the wolf packs forever. Several wolves outnumbered the wingless wolves, and the winged wolves had more strength. Baline was perhaps the fiercest of the fighters, storming through the jumble of fur, teeth, and claws, unafraid to hurt her former packmates. Then, the truth came to her.
There was no way her friends could win this fight. They were all going to die if they didn’t get out of there. “Retreat!” Baline shouted out. All the wolves looked up. “RETREAT WINGLESS WOLVES! RETREAT!” At this, Zaevix lunged at her. She was already tired, and the blow put her near fainting. Zaevix pinned her to the ground and bit the back of her neck. The life quickly drained out of the fae. Baline was dead, once and for all. The other wingless wolves stared at her in horror, and then ran. Ran from full defeat, ran from the world of the winged wolves.
The eight or so wingless wolves running from the others, and the winged wolves were howling after them. They were yelping mean things like, “Yah, run away losers!” and “Get out of here you squirrelbrains!” After a mile or so of running, the wingless wolves stopped. Panting, they looked around the clearing where they were. There was a small cave in the center, and the rest of the area was a well hidden in trees and grassy. It was a perfect place to make a camp, and rebuild. On a silent signal, the wolves began moving around there new camp. They were cleaning up the sticks and stones to make a real camp.
Meanwhile, the wingless wolves were finding a place to camp as well. They came across a plateau, a mile or two from the wingless wolves place. There were good areas to create dens, but there was still work to do on it. Zaevix nodded his head, and the wolves began to work on the camp.
And so began two wolf packs. The pack of winged wolves, known as the SkyPack, and the ones that were exiled, persecuted, and betrayed, the EarthPack.
And Stormpack lives by there own story, of three young wolves going through a wastland to create the pack. Every pack had something to be proud of, and they will fight if they must.
Welcome, my friends, to Wolves of the Skies.
